Ryagoro Eucalyptus Tree Planting Project

Background and Rationale
Tanzania continues to experience high demand for timber, poles, and fuel wood due to rapid urbanization and construction growth. Eucalyptus trees are fast-growing, drought-tolerant, and highly profitable, making them a suitable species for commercial forestry in many parts of Tanzania, especially where rainfall is moderate to high.
Communities, institutions, and churches are encouraged to establish woodlots to meet local building, health, energy, and income needs. This project aims to establish a sustainable 10-acre Eucalyptus plantation to generate income, support environmental conservation, promote health issues such as fighting germs and malaria; and provide long-term economic stability.

Project Goal
To establish a productive 10-acre eucalyptus woodlot that provides sustainable income, promote health issues, supports environmental restoration, and meets local demand for timber and poles.

Project Objectives
  • To Plant up to 6,000–10,000 eucalyptus seedlings on 10 acres during the 2026 – 2027 planting season.
  • To learn how to make use of the trees in health issues such as producing Eucalyptus oil to promote hygiene and fight malaria.
  • Generate income from sale of oils, mature poles, timber, and firewood within 5–7 years.
  • Improve soil stability and increase green cover in the project area.
  • Create short-term and long-term employment for local community.

Expected Outputs
  • 10 acres successfully planted with healthy eucalyptus seedlings.
  • Survival rate of 85–90% achieved within the first year.
  • Community members engaged in forestry activities.
  • A future sustainable wood lot generating poles, timber, and fuel wood.

Expected Long-Term Outputs
  • Income generation from sale of poles (after 4–5 years).
  • Oil Production (after 2 – 10 years)
  • Timber production (after 7–10 years).
  • Reduced pressure on natural forests.
  • Institutional self-reliance through forestry income.
