What We Do

Our Work Focuses on Development Training

Picture

Community Development Training

Our work is based on the saying,
Give a man a fish, and you feed him
for a day.
Teach him how to fish, and you feed him
for a lifetime.

  • Training aims to break the dependency cycle and transform communities by unleashing hidden potential.
  • CDP works alongside and assists local community development workers to achieve this objective by providing training to local community leaders.
  • Our purpose is to empower local people to create cohesive, self-help projects to help them live better and healthier lives.

Community Banking

  • We provide community leaders with training and resources needed to establish community banking.
  • Community banking is the building block for successful and prosperous projects.
  • Village banks foster community/village mutual trust, relationships, accountability, and participation.
  • This, in turn, mobilises people and provides sustainable access to basic financial services for poor households.

Education for Girls

  • Education for girls is not a priority in poor communities, and families rely on their daughters to look after the home.
  • Marriage straight after primary school is common, and girls have few choices or other opportunities.
  • Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is still a cultural practice.
  • Even if they gain entry to a government school, the high dropout rate is usually due to pregnancy or a lack of finances.
  • In a culture where women are not respected, even travelling to school or studying in a co-educational setting can be unsafe.
  • CDP is providing scholarships for girls from poor families who have shown potential during their time at primary school.

Health & Hygiene

Malaria is a life-threatening disease transmitted to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes. It is most prevalent in tropical regions. Prevention relies on a combination of strategies, including avoiding mosquito bites and taking preventive medication. Malaria is both preventable and curable, as it is caused by a parasite and is not spread from person to person.
In 2023, the WHO African Region accounted for approximately 94% of global malaria cases (246 million) and 95% of malaria-related deaths (569,000). Children under the age of five represented about 76% of these deaths. Groups at higher risk of severe infection include infants, young children, pregnant women and girls, travellers, and individuals living with HIV or AIDS.

CDP will introduce pilot training on the benefits of eucalyptus oil and methods for extracting it from leaves. The goal is to enable communities to produce the oil locally and use it as a multi-purpose repellent, disinfectant and antiseptic.
